Martin Cornish is one of JCW’s long-serving and experienced team members, having joined the company in 2006 as a Maintenance Engineer. Over nearly two decades, Martin has progressed into his current role as Service Manager, where he oversees key account operations including Plymouth University, UTC College, and Eggbuckland College.
His journey has taken him across a wide range of sites, from small retail units to government buildings and universities, working between JCW’s Plymouth and Bristol offices as contracts evolved. Known for his adaptability and technical expertise, Martin has transitioned from a natural gas specialist to a multi-skilled engineer and now a leader within the business.

How did you first hear about the position with JCW?
I first heard about the role through a recruiter. It was pure luck, really - JCW were struggling to fill a position for a gas engineer, and I happened to be looking at the time. They took a chance on me and I’ve been here ever since.
Why did you choose JCW?
It was the opportunity and timing. I was ready for a new challenge and JCW gave me that chance. Looking back, it was a great decision.
What has your journey at JCW looked like so far?
A bit of a blur! It’s been fast-paced and full of challenges. I’ve worked between the Plymouth and Bristol offices as our client base expanded and new contracts were secured. I started out specialising in gas engineering, then broadened my skills to become multi-skilled and eventually moved into management. I’ve worked on a huge variety of sites, from small shops to government buildings and universities, gaining experience and taking every opportunity to develop.
How has JCW supported your career development?
JCW has always backed me with the training I’ve needed, whether that’s keeping up with mandatory trade requirements, cross-training into new areas, or manufacturer-specific courses. But what’s made the biggest difference is the people. There’s a solid core of staff who’ve been here throughout my time and they’ve always been willing to share their knowledge and help others grow. That support has come from all levels, senior engineers, managers, past and present, and it’s created a culture where learning and development are just part of how we work.
What do you enjoy most about your job?
I love being able to make a real difference for our clients, supporting their business needs, improving equipment performance and compliance. I also really value the opportunity I now have to bring new people into the business and offer them the same chances I had. With the right support, it’s great to see them progress and grow in their roles, just like I did.
Would you recommend JCW to others?
Yes, without a doubt. If you’ve got a good work ethic, a drive to maintain high standards and you’re a strong team player, JCW would be a great fit, no matter what level you’re starting at. There’s real opportunity here if you’re willing to put the effort in.
What do you like to do in your spare time?
I play hockey three times a week and I’m into surfing, paddleboarding and walking. Anything outdoors really!
