How did you come to join JCW?
I joined JCW just over two and a half years ago. A friend of mine was already an apprentice with the company and when they were looking for another, he put my name forward. I’ve always been interested in electrical work, so it felt like the perfect opportunity.
Why did you choose an apprenticeship, and why with JCW?
I wanted to take a more practical, hands-on approach towards gaining my electrician’s qualification rather than going down a purely academic route. JCW stood out to me because of the variety of work and the opportunities available after qualifying.
What does a typical day look like for you?
There’s no such thing as a typical day at JCW! The work is really varied - every site and every task is different, which keeps things interesting. It’s always busy and there’s always something new to learn.
What new skills have you learnt since starting your apprenticeship?
I’m constantly learning, both through college and on the job. I’ve gained a solid grounding in the many different areas of electrical work, but I’ve also developed other key skills like teamwork, communication, problem-solving, flexibility and patience.
You’ve received some fantastic feedback recently – how did that make you feel?
It’s a really good feeling to know that my hard work is appreciated and doesn’t go unnoticed. It’s motivating and makes me feel like I’m on the right path.
What do you think helped you achieve such positive recognition?
Commitment and consistency. I always try to solve problems quickly, build good relationships with clients and colleagues and take pride in what I do.
Have there been any particular challenges along the way?
Working on my own for the first time was quite daunting. Having to use my own initiative felt like a big step, but I always knew I had colleagues at the end of the phone for advice. That support has helped me become more confident.
How has your confidence grown since starting your apprenticeship?
It’s grown massively. The more I learn and the more I interact with clients and colleagues, the more comfortable I feel taking responsibility and making decisions.
What are your goals for the next few years?
To complete my apprenticeship and become a fully qualified electrician. From there, I’d like to progress within JCW and take on new challenges as they arise.
What advice would you give to someone considering an apprenticeship with JCW?
If the opportunity arises - go for it! You’ll learn a huge amount, work with great people and have the chance to build a real career.
