Importance of Fire Extinguisher Maintenance

Fire extinguishers can help occupants protect themselves against small fires and should only be used if safety permits it. Staff should be given suitable training in how to operate this type of equipment.

In order for fire extinguishers to be fully effective in emergency situations, they must be properly maintained and inspected under the guidelines as set out by the regulations BS 5306-3:2017.

The Responsible Person for the building can conduct monthly checks of the extinguishers to help determine:

  • If the pressure is adequate.

  • If the tamper seal and pin are still intact.

  • If the fire extinguishers have taken physical harm. This includes possible dents and rust.

  • If the fire extinguishers are held in a safe area that is never obstructed by clutter.

  • If the nozzle is not hindered.

Thorough maintenance should occur at least once a year by a competent person to ensure the extinguishers are functioning correctly or if they need to be replaced or recharged. A fire extinguisher that is regularly maintained is essential for it to be fully functioning in time of need.

JCW Energy Services offers fire extinguisher service and maintenance which will ensure that:

  • The unit is located in the designated place.

  • Equipment is completely accessible and not blocked.

  • Has operating instructions which are clean and legible.

  • The pressure is at a recommended level.

  • The nozzle and the device are all working as required.

  • That the pin and tamper seal have not been disturbed.

  • Check for general wear and tear.

Water, foam, dry powder and wet chemical extinguishers will require an extended service every five years which includes a controlled full discharge and recharge. CO2 extinguishers will need to be replaced every ten years.

Proof of fire extinguisher service

During a health and safety visit you will need to demonstrate that your extinguishers have been adequately serviced. We will ensure your service label is up to date by showing the date it has been serviced and when the next service is due. We will also ensure that you have an up to date service certificate from a BAFE qualified engineer.
