Degree and Promotion

After gaining several years of experience in an administrative role since leaving college in 2007, Gemma embarked on her journey at our Service Desk as a Coordinator. Since March 2015, she has been an invaluable member of our Cambridge Head Office team. Demonstrating unwavering dedication and a wealth of knowledge, Gemma not only completed her BA in Business Studies with the Open University in 2017 but also advanced to the position of Assistant Manager by the end of 2023 with us. Gemma works closely with her Service Desk team, fostering strong and reliable working relationships with the office staff, engineers and customers alike.

How did you hear about the position with the company?

I was approached by a recruitment agent who had seen my CV online and thought I may have been compatible for the role!

Why did you choose JCW?

When growing up I was surrounded by people who had spent a lot of years working for the same company, so for me this was something I knew I wanted to do, I wanted to feel settled. So when I researched the company and came for my interview, and I got a real strong feeling of the company environment and ethos being like a family unit, and this appealed to me greatly. There was also clearly defined progression options which I have subsequently worked through.

I’ve stayed because of the people! It’s nice to wake up every morning and look forward to seeing the team when I get to the office – I’ve made some of the best friends from my time so far at JCW!

How have JCW helped your career?

JCW have helped me to grow my confidence, both at work and personally. This has been a massive help when taking on new tasks, and has also enabled me to develop a basic technical knowledge of air conditioning and heating systems, something I hadn’t really considered before I worked here, and when I started never expected to understand quite as much as I do. If there’s anything I’m unsure of, that I need to know to complete a particular task, (or want to know for my own curiosity), there is always plenty of people around the business that I can ask for assistance.

About being part of the Service Desk

Working on the Service Desk is a very reactive environment, so I would say I’ve developed my working style to be able to adapt to the “current” pace of the role.

What do you enjoy most about your job?

It’s definitely about the team for me - I work with great people. I like being in the office and having support and feedback when the workload is busy or challenging.

Would you recommend JCW and why?

100% - The company has a great ethic and everyone is a valued member of the team. We’re a nationwide company but you don’t get lost as “just a number”. Each individual is a respected and supported member of the team. There is also such a variety of opportunities to take on around the company, there is a role to suit everyone.
