Our relationship with Torpoint Athletic

Our Manager in Plymouth, John Burgoyne holds a special connection with Cornwall’s Torpoint 200 football club. John’s Grandson, William is a part of the junior under eight's team, and the Chairman of the junior’s committee is John’s son, Matt. In 2016, JCW installed Cellar Cooling for the Torpoint Athletic Club, and since then, an air conditioning installation to their bar and function room has been on the agenda. Here’s where we came in, Matt invited us to submit the costing for the AC installations, and timing was just right as JCW was also offered an opportunity to become a sponsor for the coming season for the under eights, which began in September 2018. As a company who are aware of our responsibilities with regard to our environment and our community, JCW have always been enthusiastic contributors to local area and causes, so we jumped at the chance.

The Club

Torpoint Juniors has accumulated an attendance of around 100 players aged between 4 and 10. They regularly attend two training sessions each week, with friendly matches against teams from the local area every two weeks. As the nation falls back in love with football due to the unexpected world cup success of England, we foresee a growth in junior attendance to clubs like Torpoint, across the country.

Torpoint is a Chartered Standard football club due to its affiliations to the FA, and are therefore supported by a fully functioning committee. The Junior club has an ethos to send the wonderful message that every child plays football, regardless of their ability and gender. Both male and female coaches have their presence within the club to inspire the future footballers in all children. So in addition to offering our most competitive installation proposal, we were honoured to have been invited to sponsor such as worthy community cause that will go on to influence and grow the nation’s future athletes.

JCW’s Mission

The front bar area is predominantly used for event functions and has long suffered from uncomfortable high temperatures in the summer months. However, there is a closed window policy, due to the club’s close proximity to residential housing. Any function noise will cause a disturbance when ventilation is allowed through the windows. Creating a more comfortable environment at the clubhouse would generate more social users, which means more revenue towards the development of Torpoint's young athletes.

When One Door Closes, A Window Opens…. But, when the windows cannot be opened, it’s JCW’s mission to provide a solution for summer cooling and winter heating.

Our team of design engineers decided that the best option would be to install three individual split type heat pumps with a total sensible cooling capacity of 35.7Kw. JCW proposed total of 3 x split type 4 way ceiling cassettes to the suspended ceiling in the front bar. The 3 units were to be mounted with collars in agreed positions in between the beams that run across the bar.

Toshiba digital inverter 4 way cassette systems were sourced and installed in suspended positions. Toshiba recommended collars on each system as the ceiling void’s depth was less than required.

Air Conditioning Equipment for Bar Cooling:

The installation of the Toshiba heat pump combination system provides a total capacity of 12kW of heating or cooling per unit and all three units can be controlled from one hard wired controller. The indoor units mounted underneath the ceiling and the outdoor units mounted on anti-vibration mounts at ground level outside on the pitch side of the clubhouse.

Air Conditioning Controls

Air conditioning system control is achieved via one Toshiba Lite-Vision Plus back lit Hi Spec Wired Controller c/w 24hr 7 day timer. This has been installed behind the bar in agreed location.

Words from our JCW Project Manager

“All installation works were carried out in accordance with HVAC codes of practice, and completed with suitable anti vibration supports and containment for the interconnecting pipe work and wiring. JCW is proud to be a sponsor for such a worthy cause, Torpoint Athletic FC is such an important community hub, for the junior, youth and senior teams and also the club members which integrates the young and not so young during match days and functions.”

Future Maintenance

The club’s installation has been approved by Toshiba and the first year’s maintenance of the air conditioning system has been included within the installation cost. To make sure the equipment is maintained for efficiency, compliance and warranty validity, a complete planned preventative maintenance programme has been recommended to run alongside the defects period and 7 year enhanced parts and labour warranty.

Conclusion

It was most certainly a pleasure to have worked alongside the Torpoint FC, who's passionate and committed governing members obviously take pride in what they’ve built over the years. Their enthusiasm to enrich and fulfill the young footballers of Torpoint is a true inspiration.

With Thanks, From Torpoint

As a testament and of Torpoint’s appreciation with our installations and sponsorship, JCW were Invited to attend the Season’s first match as VIP guests.

Here’s a few kind words from Chairman Paul Whitworth:

“JCW Energy Services recently fitted a much needed air conditioning system in our main function room at Torpoint Athletic Football Club.  During busy functions the room was getting extremely hot, causing slippage issues on the dance floor due to perspiration.  We were also having to open the windows to ventilate the room but this was causing noise disturbance for nearby residents.  JCW came and surveyed to assess the requirement and shortly after quickly and efficiently installed a brand new air conditioning system.  This has proved to be fantastic!  We can hold large scale functions without having to open the windows, hence residents aren’t disturbed and the room itself is a much more pleasant environment for all attending.  We can maintain a comfortable temperature whatever the weather outside.  We would definitely recommend JCW Energy Services to anyone looking for an efficient company and an efficient system.”
