If you follow football, then you will have no doubt heard a lot about the all new stadium that is being built by Tottenham Hotspur. This £850 million project is well underway with 2,100 people working on site day and night to ensure it is ready in time for the start of the 2018/19 Premier League. When the construction is finished, the stadium will be able to hold more than 62,000 supporters. So, when one of those supporters was asked to head up an HVAC installations project, you can imagine how excited he would have been!
The construction of such a vast building consists of many elements, each element has its own group of specialists planning, preparing, organizing and completing their own project specifications. We have worked with C & D Electrical for many years, supporting each other in various projects. Part of their responsibility was to complete the extremely important Comms room for this prestigious stadium. They needed an experienced air conditioning installation company who they could work with to ensure that the cooling equipment was fitted to the highest standard in such a critical area of the site.
C & D came to us for our experience and expertise in the HVAC field and we wanted to put a Project Manager in charge of the installation who, wasn’t just highly qualified, but was also passionate about the project itself. Simon Irwin, long term Spurs fan, jumped at the chance!
The new Comms room holds the server racks and mobile phone carriers all in a relatively small space. This amount of equipment in a contained room quickly builds up heat. In order to keep the servers and other equipment housed within the area running smoothly, it is vital that the environment is continuously controlled. Excess heat could lead to shorter component life and ultimately system failure.
To ensure that the area could be cooled sufficiently we chose Daikin 14kw split ceiling cassettes which produce a high cooling capacity. The system chosen also runs on R32 which is a more economical refrigerant and has a far lower environmental impact than its predecessors.
R32 is relatively new technology and our engineers have had specific manufacturers training to enable them to install and commission these systems. To find out more about the benefits of R32 systems, please click here.
The controls were installed and formatted In line with the critical Comms room control strategy forming an essential element of the co-ordinated programme.
The stadium is being constructed to a very strict timetable and we were given an 8 week window in which we could complete the installation.
Key Facts (Air Conditioning)
Manufacturer Chosen: Daikin
System: R32 Split System
Ground Floor Equipment: No. 8 x 14kw SkyAir Alpha Series Ceiling Cassettes
Co-ordinated Programme: 8 Weeks
Final Handover Date: To be confirmed
Although this was a relatively simple project for us to complete, it still came with its own challenges.
The area where we were to install the equipment was on the sixth floor. Therefore, it was imperative that the timing of the deliveries coordinated with the use of the hoists. We ensured that the delivery drivers were also FORS accredited to meet the criteria specified on site.
The site itself, with over 2,000 people working there, was busy to say the least. We needed to ensure we worked seamlessly around the other contractors so as not to disturb their project schedule and minimize any downtime for all parties concerned.
As the area that we were working in was small, we kept to a team of 2 installation engineers who have worked together for many years and could use this experience to their advantage.
Words from our JCW Project Manager, Simon Irwin
“The project has seen its challenges. Being part of a huge jigsaw meant the coordination with the overall site build has been the main obstacle. Working hand in hand with C+D we have collaborated as a team effectively and achieved the target dates set, well within the programme schedule.”
The system chosen is part of the Daikin new range of R32 systems. Aside from the fact that the use of R32 is more energy and cost efficient, the system itself comes with many advantages, such as.
360° air discharge for optimum efficiency and comfort
Two optional intelligent sensors improve energy efficiency and comfort
Reduced energy consumption thanks to specially developed small tube exchanger, DC fan motor and drain pump
Combinations with Sky Air Alpha series ensures best in class quality, highest efficiency and performance
Handover & Training
Full commissioning, site training, practical completion and snagging will take place once the whole site is more advanced in the construction phase. This will then be followed by the official completion and handover.
A full detailed O & M (Operation and Maintenance) Manual including the commissioning programme with commissioning drawings and the Health & Safety file will be provided at the time of handover, as well as user training, in line with CIBSI (Chartered Institute of Building Services Engineers) guidelines.
A complete planned preventative maintenance programme will then be prepared to run alongside the defects period and 7 year warranty, in line with the manufacturers recommendations and our Daikin approved status.
Working on such a high-profile construction site with so many other personnel brought a new experience to our installations team. Whether a Spurs supporter or not, all of JCW are proud to have been involved in this incredible project. As for Simon, this will be a project he managed that he will talk about for years to come!
