A Very Special Installation

The Client

Although we are experienced in the installation of heating, air conditioning and ventilation systems for complex projects up to the value of £1million, it is sometimes the simpler, smaller projects that give us pleasure!

We have worked with Aurum Holdings Limited for over 15 years providing planned and reactive mechanical and electrical maintenance services. More recently we provided a complete project management and installation service for their R22 replacement programme across their portfolio. Through this experience, we can safely say that we know their sites and requirements very well.

But there was always one very special site that we hoped we would be able to install a very important air conditioning system to.  Read on to find out more…

Aurum Holdings incorporate brands such as Goldsmiths, Watches of Switzerland and of course Mappin & Webb. For over a year we have been discussing a beautiful Mappin & Webb site and how we can best place essential spot cooling in one of their most prestigious boutiques.

The Venue

This boutique is located in none other than the The Old Course Hotel Golf Resort and Spa at St Andrews.

Recognised as one of Europe’s leading resorts, this prestigious AA Five Star awarded hotel overlooks the famous link courses, the West Sands Beach and beautiful Scottish coastline.

The Mappin & Webb boutique proudly sits within the hotel complex and boasts a range of elegant, fine jewellery collections alongside prestigious Swiss timepieces and are an official Rolex agency. It regularly attracts visitors from all over the world. It is of paramount importance that customers browsing the eye-catching displays are comfortable in the surrounding environment and therefore being able to regulate the temperature is a top priority.

JCW’s Mission

Our Small Works team have years of experience installing split air conditioning systems into retail outlets. We arranged for a two man team to travel to the venue, begin the works, stay overnight and complete, commission and handover the system the following day. We had to do this with as little disruption as possible.

The system we needed had to be discreet and modern with optimal efficiency, it also had to be whisper quiet while in operation so as not to distract the attention of potential customers.

The Equipment Chosen

Manufacturer:                  Daikin

System:                            Wall Mounted Split System

Equipment:                      Wall Mounted Unit FTXS-K

                                         Condenser RXS-L

The Challenges

Electricity

With not being able to provide an additional supply to the electricity, we needed to ensure the equipment chosen was of a lower enough wattage to run from the existing supply without the possibility of switches tripping but also to be powerful enough to run the system to its most energy efficient capacity and provide the necessary heating and cooling.

 Aesthetics

First and foremost, upholding the aesthetics of the exterior of this stunning building was crucial. Much of the deliberation over the last year was with regard to where we could best place the external condenser. Once the most suitable equipment was chosen we then provided an artist’s impression of where the condenser could sit and how it would look, neatly hidden behind shrubbery.

Words from the Senior Project Manager

“The appearance of the installation had to compliment the show room and blend in to the existing fixtures and fittings.  I believe this was achieved. Also, the outdoor penetrations, which were diamond drilled, was not to disturb or damage the smart facade which covered the outside walls. On this occasion, the appearance and attention to detail was paramount.

The staff on site will feel the immediate benefit of this air-conditioning system especially with the recent warm spell.”

Energy Efficiency

The system we chose is one of the quietest on the market with a sound pressure level that goes down to just 19dBA. It has a 2-area intelligent eye, this means that air flow is sent to a zone other than where the person is located at that moment so there would not be an uncomfortable draft. If no people are detected, the unit will automatically switch over to the energy-efficient setting. Also, with a seasonal efficiency value of up to A++ in cooling and heating, this system was perfect.

Handover & Training

A detailed Operational Manual was provided at time of handover which includes recommendations on the use of the system and controller settings. Our engineer on site provided user training to the staff within the boutique and answered questions with regard to the operation of the system.

Future Maintenance

The first year’s maintenance of the air conditioning system has been included within the installation cost. A complete planned preventative maintenance programme will then be prepared to run alongside the defects period and 7 year warranty, in line with the manufacturers recommendations and our approved status.

Conclusion

Now the commissioning of the system and handover is complete. The staff of Mappin & Webb have received training on the best use of the system, how to maintain the optimum temperature while running the system within its best capabilities. The site will now be provided with regular planned maintenance visits to ensure the system continues to run effectively and efficiently.

It was a pleasure to finally install this split system to such a prestigious boutique and we are sure it will provide the essential heating and cooling for browsing customers to ensure that they remain comfortable in the environment of the glamorous Rolex Lounge.

Testimonial

Christine | Mappin & Webb

“We are delighted with the air conditioning that has recently been installed. We were given a demonstration on the use of the appliance by JCW engineers and been left an Operational Manual.

I have to commend the gentlemen who worked on the job. There was minimal disruption to us and they were very tidy, even hoovering up after themselves!”
