Nick to Run the London Marathon

London Marathon JCW

JCW’s Engineer, Nick Churchman, Running the London Marathon – Again!

When it comes to caring staff, JCW certainly has their fair share.

While on holiday a couple of years ago our HVAC engineer of 14 years and keen runner, Nick Churchman, was talking to a good friend of his explaining his love of running and thoughts about finally completing a full marathon, something he had aspired to do for some years.  Nick’s friend, whose grandchild is blind, began to tell him about a charity called Victa (http://www.victa.org.uk/) who support families with blind or partially sighted children with equipment and apparatus for the home and take children out for day trips and other organized events.  Victa raises money in a number of ways; one of them is through fund raising from people taking part in the London Marathon.

Nick, who lives in Essex, had found his motivation and enrolled through Victa and completed in his first London Marathon in 2014.  During this event he met a father and son team who also run for Victa, the son is blind and the father acts as his guide and support during the run.  Nick was really humbled by this and it gave him further inspiration and determination.  Even though he suffered with an injured hip in the 11th mile, he completed the run in just under 5 and a half hours and raised money for this worthy cause along the way.

Nick ran the marathon again in 2015 and bettered his time substantially down to just over 4 and a half hours and is now in training for the marathon being held on the 24th April 2016, again raising money for Victa.

When asked about his training Nick says he runs 4 times a week which includes one run at the weekends of well over 3 hours.  He says that this is his time to de-stress, think and generally focus on the task ahead.  He has already completed half marathons this year and is planning to complete the marathon in Liverpool in May and another half in Southend in June, which will be his 5 year anniversary of this event.

When asked if he was getting nervous, Nick explained that he will start his ‘taper’ period soon and have to start reducing his running time to help preserve energy for the big day and that the only thing he was concerned about was picking up an illness the week before!

Nick Family London marathon

Nick’s love of running is now rubbing off on his family as his 10 year old daughter will be completing her first run in July at the Olympic Park.  It is his family who he will first go to and celebrate with after completing the marathon, before taking a well-earned couple of days off!

JCW are proud to have a character such as Nick working for them and will be sponsoring him and supporting Victa in the process.  If you too would like to support Nick and Victa,  you can make a donation through his Virgin Money Giving page:
